Holmes Packaging and Avalon Engineering were awarded a Food Category "Silver Award" for Stratapac™ in the thirteenth DuPont Awards announced February 10, 2000.

The DuPont Awards for Innovation in Food Processing and Packaging Technology is an international industry competition to recognise food and non-food industry advances that use plastic materials.

The twelve-member judging panel select winners based on the following criteria;

• Degree of innovation
• Potential impact on the industry and consumers
• Breadth of application for today and tomorrow

The DuPont Awards judging panel is an international, independent group of qualified experts who represent the food processing and packaging industries, equipment suppliers, the trade press, governmental and environmental and trade organisations.

The competition is sponsored by DuPont, in cooperation with Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association in Gloucestershire, England and the National Food Processors Association in Washinton, D.C.

Holmes Packaging and Avalon Engineering, a division of Niro Inc, jointly entered Stratapac™.

Stratapac™ provides the ideal solution where a high level of protection and critical hygienic packaging is required. Through use of specific sealant resins and special sealing equipment, the inner and outer bags of the Stratapac™ block bottom plastic sack are sealed independently, but simultaneously.

A convenient, easy-open perforation is applied between the seals so that the outer bag can be easily opened and the fully sealed inner bag removed and processed in an environment where hygienic processing is critical.

The inner liner may utilise barrier or non-barrier film, depending on product requirements. Stratapac™ offers up to 30% source reduction over a typical three-ply multiwall sack.
